Important news for landscape photographers!
03.31.06- Sacramento, California - According to CNN, starting in April, landscape photographers working in California, will have to pay a photo fee of $100 per published image. The collected funds will be donated to the "Ansel Adams Foundation" and used by this non-profit organization for landscape protection from abuse by photographers. Legislation was signed yesterday by Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's Governor.
This bill was introduced by Sen. Dave Cox (R), representing the Eastern Sierra counties of California and approved by both chambers last week. The law provides harsh fines and even jail time for those photographers found in default of not paying the imposed fee. Ansel Adams Foundation Board of Directors will be consulted in each case, and punishment could include 5-10years in prison, or more painful sentences like spending time with the American Assoc. of Viper Growers (AAVG), or as a barn-hand at the George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tx.
Before the signing ceremony took place yesterday in Sacramento, Ca., a large group of landscape photographers staged a protest on the steps of the California Capitol. The demonstration was interupted by local police when some of the photographers started to throw empty film canisters towards the Senators entering the Capitol. There were a few arrests, amongst them a local Sacramento photographer N.Riley. He was wearing a T-shirt with the inscription "F64 rules, Ansel Adams sucks". It's unclear at this time if the photographer will be charged with harrassment or fined.
